The Corrosion Behavior in Different Environments of Austenitic Stainless Steels Subjected to Thermochemical Surface Treatments at Low Temperatures: An Overview

نویسندگان

چکیده

Low-temperature thermochemical treatments are particularly suitable for use in the surface hardening of austenitic stainless steels without impairing their corrosion resistance. In fact, when using treatment media rich nitrogen and/or carbon at relatively low temperatures (<450 °C nitriding, <550 carburizing), it is possible to inhibit formation chromium compounds and obtain modified layers that consist mainly a supersaturated solid solution, known as expanded austenite or S-phase. It has been observed this hard phase allows enhancement resistance chloride-ion-containing solutions, while results were contradictory chloride-free acidic solutions. This overview aims discuss behavior low-temperature-treated steels, taking into account different microstructures compositions layers, well test environments conditions. particular, both solutions (sulfuric acid, sulfate borate solutions) discussed. The analysis international literature presents evidence microstructure composition have key roles resistance, especially sulfuric acid

Low-Temperature Carburization of Austenitic Stainless Steels

LOW-TEMPERATURE CARBURIZATION is a gaseous carburization process performed at atmospheric pressure, at temperatures where the kinetics of substitutional diffusion are very slow. Low-temperature carburization hardens the surface of austenitic stainless steels through the diffusion of interstitial carbon, without the formation of carbides. The surface must be activated, by modification and remova...

Study of the Corrosion Resistance of Austenitic Stainless Steels during Conversion of Waste to Biofuel

The paper deals with the corrosion behavior of stainless steels as candidate materials for biofuel production plants by liquefaction process of the sorted organic fraction of municipal solid waste. Corrosion tests were carried out on AISI 316L and AISI 304L stainless steels at 250 °C in a batch reactor during conversion of raw material to bio-oil (biofuel precursor), by exposing specimens eithe...

Characterization of Austenitic Stainless Steels Deformed at Elevated Temperature

Highly alloyed austenitic stainless steels are promising candidates to replace more expensive nickel-based alloys within the energy-producing industry. The present study investigates the deformation mechanisms by microstructural characterization, mechanical properties and stress–strain response of three commercial austenitic stainless steels and two commercial nickel-based alloys using uniaxial...

Attachment of Listeria monocytogenes to an austenitic stainless steel after welding and accelerated corrosion treatments.

Austenitic stainless steels, widely used in food processing, undergo microstructural changes during welding, resulting in three distinctive zones: weld metal, heat-affected zone, and base metal. This research was conducted to determine the attachment of Listeria monocytogenes in these three zones before and after exposure to a corrosive environment. All experiments were done with tungsten inert...
